Introduction The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne has a long and fascinating history and many important features of this past still survive intermingled with modern construction around the city. The Black Gate situated in the Castle Garth area of the city is one such treasure, historically important, architecturally complex and visually attractive. For over a hundred years the Black Gate has been the residence of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle Upon Tyne, the second oldest antiquarian society in the world. This site details a little of the history and importance of the Black Gate and the Castle of Newcastle Upon Tyne to which it belongs.
