The Society of Antiquaries The Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle Upon Tyne is the second oldest Society of Antiquaries in Britain and offers a regular and varied programme of lectures and outdoor events. It produces the journal Archaeologia Aeliana annually, along with other publications and a twice-yearly news bulletin for members. The Society's collections include both archives and objects housed in locations such as the Museum of Antiquities and the Castle Keep, Newcastle. The Society's library resides within the Black Gate. The collection consists of some thirty thousand volumes mainly relating to the Society's area of interest covering all periods of the history of the North East of England. The library is open to members on Wednesdays 1400-1600h, Thursdays 1700-1900h and Saturdays 1000-1200h except Christmas week. Non members may visit the library by arrangement.
