This timeline relates a history of the site of the Castle Keep of Newcastle upon Tyne, from Roman times to the present day. When the site was first occupied, it was a real frontier stronghold at the edge of an empire. For centuries afterwards, Newcastle was a strategically important town, and the Castle continued to play a vital role in England’s defenses.
