Tudors and Stuarts

1485 AD
Richard III is defeated at the Battle of Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor who becomes King Henry VII.
Although the Keep continued to be the county gaol, and the Great Hall was used as an Assize Court (similar to our Crown Courts), the castle yard was a sanctuary for criminals. Because the castle was officially part of Northumberland, it was outside the jurisdiction of the town authorities of Newcastle. Debtors and other offenders wanted in Newcastle could escape justice by taking refuge inside the castle yard.
1503 AD

Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII, marries James IV of Scotland. She stops in Newcastle on her way to her wedding.
1513 AD Battle of Flodden Field in Northumberland.

The English defeated the Scots and their king, James V was killed. His embalmed body was taken through Newcastle to Richmond.
1550 AD

Robert Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, becomes protector to Edward VI, who is just 12 years old.
