1688 The Glorious Revolution
Due to James being a Roman Catholic there was strong opposition to his
accession to the throne. When he began appointing Catholics to public
office the Parliament invited William of Orange, who was married to
James’ daughter Mary, to jointly, rule with her.
After much legal wrangling, the warrant issued by James in 1685 was
set aside by William of Orange. Although the Corporation eventually
entered into a lease they could not re-introduce the town by-laws into
the Castle Garth area.
