1688 The Glorious Revolution
Due to James being a Roman Catholic there was strong opposition to his accession to the throne. When he began appointing Catholics to public office the Parliament invited William of Orange, who was married to James’ daughter Mary, to jointly, rule with her.
After much legal wrangling, the warrant issued by James in 1685 was set aside by William of Orange. Although the Corporation eventually entered into a lease they could not re-introduce the town by-laws into the Castle Garth area.
